Lee reported that Trump expressed interest in the strategy, which focuses on halting the production of nuclear materials and curbing the transfer of ICBM technology. The South Korean leader emphasized that current sanctions have lost their efficacy, particularly due to deepening military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. According to Lee, North Korea’s capability to produce enough material for up to 20 nuclear weapons annually necessitates a shift from rigid pressure toward a step-by-step diplomatic roadmap. Trump, who previously engaged in direct summits with Kim Jong Un before the 2019 collapse in Hanoi, noted that he would carefully consider the phased proposal.
Beyond regional security, the two leaders discussed industrial cooperation. Trump inquired about South Korea’s capacity to accelerate the construction of U.S. warships, a request Lee met with a commitment to leverage Seoul’s $150 billion investment plan in the American shipbuilding sector. During his diplomatic tour, Lee also secured interest from Pope Leo regarding a potential visit to the Demilitarized Zone, signaling an effort to broaden international engagement with the Korean peninsula’s security architecture.
