The incident unfolded after the carriage driver stepped away to take a photograph, causing the horse to bolt. As the vehicle accelerated through the park, Priya Mahajan fell from the carriage. Her son, Romanch, jumped from the moving transport to assist her, sustaining a fatal head injury in the process. Despite receiving emergency care at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries.

Romanch was the son of Deepak and Priya Mahajan, a prominent business family from Pathankot involved in hospitality and retail. Having recently completed his schooling at The Angel's Public School, he had just secured admission to a university in Jaipur. His father described the teenager as a bright student who had been looking forward to beginning his higher education. The family’s visit to New York was their first trip to the United States, intended as a vacation to celebrate his academic achievements.
