While the Swiss government stated that preparatory work at the mountaintop site continues and expressed readiness to facilitate future discussions, the immediate path forward remains unclear.
Signs of friction preceded the cancellation. Iran’s Tasnim news agency suggested earlier that Tehran’s delegation required concrete evidence of American compliance with the preliminary deal before committing to the journey. With no confirmation that Iranian negotiators were ever prepared to travel, the collapse of Friday’s meeting highlights the fragile nature of the current diplomatic efforts.
