Czech Republic Pushes Defense Spending Target to 2027

Prime Minister Andrej Babis confirmed on Friday that the Czech Republic will once again fall short of NATO’s minimum defense spending benchmark this year. Despite previous commitments to reach the two percent threshold, the government has revised its current budget downward, signaling a delay in meeting the alliance's core financial obligations.

The country’s defense allocation is now projected to land between 1.7 and 1.8 percent of GDP, a retreat from earlier plans to hit the two percent mark. This shortfall occurs as many NATO allies accelerate their military investments, with some nations already charting a course toward the 3.5 percent expenditure target envisioned for 2035. While the current administration acknowledges the gap, officials have pivoted their strategy, setting 2027 as the new horizon for finally achieving the alliance's minimum spending requirements.
