Fatal Horse Carriage Accident in Central Park Claims Indian Teen

When a horse bolted through Central Park on Wednesday, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan leaped from the runaway carriage to save his falling mother. The teen struck his head on the pavement during the chaotic scramble, succumbing to his injuries hours later at a local hospital while his family looked on.

The incident unfolded near a fountain when the carriage driver stepped away to photograph the Mahajan family. Sampson, a seven-year-old horse that had been working in the park for six weeks, suddenly bolted, dragging the vehicle onto a sidewalk before colliding with another carriage. Viral footage captured the moment the carriage tipped, throwing passengers and ultimately leading to the fatal injury of the teen, who had arrived from India just days earlier to celebrate his university acceptance.

Alexander Kemp, vice president of the Transport Workers Union Local 100, confirmed this is the first fatality involving a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park’s 150-year history. The unnamed driver has been suspended indefinitely for leaving his post, a violation of industry safety protocols. In the aftermath, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Central Park Conservancy have renewed calls for a total ban on the practice, citing this as the eighth horse-related incident in the park over the past 13 months.
