The analysis reveals a stark contrast in performance over the last nine years. While trade with Britain contracted, German exports to the remaining EU member states surged by 41% between 2016 and 2025. This downturn marks a reversal of a decade-long trend: from 2006 to 2015, German-British trade expanded by nearly 38%, significantly outperforming the 20% growth rate recorded with the rest of the EU.
Researchers at the institute contend that the post-Brexit trade environment has inflicted measurable economic damage on both sides of the English Channel. Given the current trajectory, they argue that Germany’s economic interests would be better served by a potential British return to the European single market, which would likely stabilize the volatile trade relationship.
