German Exports to Britain Stagnate Following Brexit

German exports to the United Kingdom have slumped by approximately 7% since the 2016 Brexit referendum, a sharp divergence from the robust growth seen in trade with other European Union partners. New data from the German Economic Institute highlights the widening economic gap caused by the UK’s withdrawal from the bloc.

The analysis reveals a stark contrast in performance over the last nine years. While trade with Britain contracted, German exports to the remaining EU member states surged by 41% between 2016 and 2025. This downturn marks a reversal of a decade-long trend: from 2006 to 2015, German-British trade expanded by nearly 38%, significantly outperforming the 20% growth rate recorded with the rest of the EU.

Researchers at the institute contend that the post-Brexit trade environment has inflicted measurable economic damage on both sides of the English Channel. Given the current trajectory, they argue that Germany’s economic interests would be better served by a potential British return to the European single market, which would likely stabilize the volatile trade relationship.
