The decision marks a shift in the bloc’s approach to maintaining pressure on Moscow regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. By locking in the sanctions for 12 months rather than the standard six, the EU aims to provide a more stable and predictable framework for its policy, reducing the frequency of internal negotiations required to maintain the status quo. This adjustment follows private discussions among leaders who have signaled increasing caution regarding potential diplomatic engagements with the Kremlin.
