Germany Mulls Extending Oil Reserve Waiver Amid Supply Stabilization

Germany is weighing whether to prolong the partial release of its national oil reserves past the August 31 deadline, as the economy ministry evaluates the impact of recent geopolitical shifts on global energy markets. The country initially lowered its stockpiling requirements in March to support an IEA-led emergency response.

The government’s deliberation follows an international effort to curb crude price spikes, during which Germany contributed 19.5 million barrels—or 2.65 million metric tons—to a collective 400-million-barrel release. While an interim deal concerning the Strait of Hormuz suggests a cooling of the supply disruptions that prompted the move, officials remain cautious about ending the waiver prematurely.

Despite the ongoing discussions, the ministry emphasized that the bulk of the nation's strategic assets remain untouched. Current assessments indicate no physical energy shortages within the country, and officials have signaled that no further emergency releases are currently planned beyond the existing commitment.
