Pentagon Signals Openness to Permanent U.S. Base in Poland

Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the U.S. Department of Defense has reacted positively to Warsaw's proposal for a permanent military installation on Polish soil. The discussions, held in Brussels with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, mark a shift from the current model of rotational troop deployments.

The potential for a permanent American footprint on NATO’s eastern flank has gained traction following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. While the U.S. has expressed openness to the plan, Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that no formal decision has been finalized. The proposal remains part of a broader push by Poland to bolster regional collective defense.

Simultaneously, the Pentagon is initiating a comprehensive review of U.S. troop deployments across Europe. Secretary Hegseth signaled a stricter approach to alliance obligations, warning that Washington may withhold NATO dues if member states fail to meet their defense spending targets. This pressure on "free riding" allies frames the ongoing negotiations regarding future military infrastructure in the region.
