Israel Expands Southern Lebanon Buffer Zone Amid Stalled U.S. Talks

The Israeli military has released an updated map detailing an expanded zone of control in southern Lebanon, pushing several kilometers deeper into the country near the Hezbollah stronghold of Nabatieh. This move comes as Israeli officials engage in what they describe as stubborn negotiations with Washington regarding troop deployments.

While an interim pact signed Wednesday between the U.S. and Iran theoretically mandates an end to hostilities and respect for Lebanese sovereignty, Israel shows no immediate intent to withdraw. The newly published map designates a dark red corridor where IDF forces continue to operate, effectively extending their reach north of the Litani River. This expansion persists despite ongoing clashes, with Hezbollah using explosive drones to target Israeli positions throughout the week.

Internal friction between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump has intensified following the U.S.-Iran agreement. Israeli leadership views the pact as insufficient regarding Iran's nuclear program and restrictive toward their current military operations. Although Trump has publicly criticized the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Lebanon, there is currently no evidence that Washington plans to leverage military aid or arms shipments to force a retreat. Analysts suggest the agreement’s language regarding Lebanese sovereignty leaves a narrow margin for interpretation, leaving the presence of Israeli troops in these self-declared buffer zones a central point of geopolitical contention.
