Hungary Seeks End to European Parliament Lawsuit Over Released Funds

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced Thursday that he intends to petition the European Parliament to drop its ongoing legal challenge against the European Commission. The lawsuit targets the executive body’s 2023 decision to release 10.2 billion euros in frozen funds to Budapest, a move that sparked significant legislative backlash.

Hungary Seeks End to European Parliament Lawsuit Over Released Funds

The European Parliament initiated the litigation in 2024, arguing the Commission bypassed its authority by unblocking the capital. This financial release occurred in December 2023, coinciding with intense diplomatic efforts to convince Hungary to lift its veto on critical aid packages for Ukraine. Critics of the Commission’s decision maintain that the funds were used as leverage to secure Budapest’s cooperation on the military and financial support for Kyiv, effectively compromising the integrity of EU budget regulations. By seeking to withdraw the lawsuit, the current administration aims to settle a dispute that has strained relations between the Hungarian government and European lawmakers for months.
