IAEA Prepares Technical Oversight for US-Iran Ceasefire

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, confirmed his organization will begin immediate technical discussions to implement the interim peace deal between Washington and Tehran. The agreement, signed Wednesday, extends an existing April ceasefire by 60 days, covering both Iran and Lebanon to facilitate final truce negotiations.

The 14-point memorandum, digitally signed by Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, places the transition under IAEA supervision. Grossi emphasized that the agency must now define specific access requirements and verification steps to ensure compliance with the newly enacted terms. While previous diplomatic efforts in February collapsed within 48 hours, leading to a regional escalation, the IAEA director insisted that stakeholders must capitalize on this renewed window for stability.

Technical experts from the U.S. and Iran are expected to meet with agency officials to translate general principles into actionable mandates. The scope of the IAEA’s mission will depend entirely on the final provisions established during these negotiations. Despite a history of stalled talks in Geneva, Grossi signaled a commitment to the process, noting that the agency’s role remains critical to defining exactly what inspectors will access and monitor throughout the ceasefire period.
