Speaking to the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents' Club in Taipei, Lai emphasized that the U.S. security commitment remains intact despite recent uncertainty. His remarks address growing anxiety in Taipei following comments from President Donald Trump, who recently suggested that arms sales to Taiwan could be used as a bargaining tool in broader negotiations with China. Lai maintains that Taiwan must remain steadfast in its defense modernization, arguing that any delay in strengthening military capabilities would be a strategic error.
Beijing continues to categorize Lai as a separatist, consistently rejecting his overtures for dialogue based on parity. While Lai reiterated his willingness to hold talks, he insisted that the island’s future rests exclusively with the Taiwanese people. Protecting the island’s democratic way of life and rejecting governance by the Chinese Communist Party are non-negotiable pillars of his administration’s policy, which he insists do not constitute an act of aggression against the mainland.
