Taiwan pivots to drone-focused defense after budget cuts

Following a sharp legislative pruning of its initial $40 billion supplementary defense request, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense is pivoting to a leaner strategy. On Thursday, officials proposed an additional T$210 billion—roughly $6.66 billion—specifically earmarked for an expansive drone procurement program lasting through 2031.

The ministry’s updated roadmap prioritizes three core operational areas to bolster the island’s asymmetric warfare capabilities. The budget covers the acquisition of coastal surveillance and reconnaissance units, coastal attack drones, and a fleet of small, unmanned surface vessels designed for suicide strikes. These systems reflect a strategic shift toward cost-effective, high-mobility hardware capable of monitoring and engaging threats in the Taiwan Strait.

This specific funding request emerges after parliament slashed the government’s broader $40 billion supplementary defense proposal by two-thirds. By narrowing the scope to unmanned technology, the ministry hopes to secure legislative approval for critical modernization projects that were previously caught in the crossfire of domestic budget disputes.
