North Korea recalls ambassador to London over children's camp sanctions

Pyongyang has pulled its newly appointed ambassador to Britain, Mun Myong Sin, just one month into his tenure, effectively downgrading diplomatic relations between the two nations. This move serves as a direct retaliatory measure against British sanctions targeting the Songdowon International Children’s Camp.

North Korea recalls ambassador to London over children's camp sanctions

The North Korean embassy in London confirmed the withdrawal, stating that diplomatic ties will remain at the charge d’affaires level until the United Kingdom rescinds its restrictions. London designated the facility in May as part of a network of youth programs involved in the forced indoctrination and deportation of Ukrainian children, a move Pyongyang labels a heinous, politically motivated provocation designed to damage its international standing and undermine its relationship with Moscow.

North Korean officials maintain that the camp provides exemplary care for its youth and described the British sanctions as a malicious act that will carry consequences. While the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has declined to comment on the status of the ambassador or the specific diplomatic fallout, the incident marks a sharp decline in bilateral relations. Britain maintains an embassy in Pyongyang, though the facility has been closed since the start of the global pandemic.
