Lula warns Trump to stay out of Brazilian electoral politics

Conflict flared at the G7 summit in Switzerland as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva publicly challenged Donald Trump to refrain from interfering in Brazil’s upcoming October elections. While acknowledging Trump’s right to personal political preferences, the Brazilian leader drew a sharp line against external pressure on his nation's democratic process.

Lula warns Trump to stay out of Brazilian electoral politics

The friction follows Trump’s recent remarks characterizing Brazil as politically dangerous and claiming that American influence remains the toughest force on the global stage. Lula, currently preparing for a reelection bid, faces a challenge from Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The elder Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest following a conviction for plotting a coup after the 2022 election.

Diplomatic tensions deepened after the U.S. State Department criticized the Brazilian Supreme Court’s recent conviction of Eduardo Bolsonaro. The former lawmaker was found guilty of soliciting U.S. interference in his father’s legal proceedings. A State Department spokesperson labeled the ruling part of a pattern of lawfare, insisting that political disputes belong in the ballot box rather than the courtroom. This clash highlights the deepening rift between the current Brazilian administration and the Bolsonaro family’s international allies.
