Trump Asserts Leadership at G7 Amid Shifting Ukraine Stance

“I’m the boss,” Donald Trump told fellow global leaders on Wednesday, signaling a confident return to the center of G7 diplomacy in Evian-les-Bains. The remark punctuated a summit where the U.S. president signaled a notable shift in his approach to the war in Ukraine, distancing himself from previous skepticism toward Kyiv.

The summit’s joint statement marks a departure from last year’s meeting in Canada, where G7 members failed to reach a consensus on the conflict. Trump now openly characterizes Russia as the offensive party, noting that Moscow is suffering heavier battlefield losses than Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders have interpreted this as a genuine change in approach, potentially strengthening Kyiv’s leverage in future negotiations.

While the G7 has moved toward a unified stance on Ukraine, tensions remain regarding other geopolitical priorities. Leaders expressed cautious optimism over a preliminary peace deal with Iran, though Trump underscored the fragility of the agreement. He warned that the memorandum is not final, threatening a return to military action if Tehran fails to comply with U.S. expectations. European allies remain concerned that an inexperienced American negotiating team may struggle to secure a comprehensive deal covering ballistic missiles and regional proxy forces.

Beyond security, the summit highlighted a collective push to reduce economic dependence on China. Leaders agreed to coordinate the stockpiling of critical minerals used in defense and renewable energy, aiming to diversify supply chains. The agenda also included discussions on artificial intelligence, with OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei joining heads of state to address the risks of automated systems and the spread of digital misinformation.
