Lee Jae Myung Urges Trump to Spearhead North Korea Diplomacy

During a brief encounter at the G7 summit, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung pressed Donald Trump to leverage his diplomatic influence to de-escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula, echoing the U.S. president's past efforts in the Middle East as a potential blueprint for future engagement with Pyongyang.

The exchange occurred during a group photo session, where Trump initiated a query regarding the current state of relations with North Korea. According to presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, Lee seized the moment to request that Trump take a lead role in facilitating a peaceful resolution. Trump signaled a willingness to intervene, later discussing the expansion of bilateral cooperation in sectors such as shipbuilding and emphasizing the necessity of trilateral alignment between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo.

This diplomatic overture follows a period of stagnation since the collapse of the 2019 Hanoi summit, which failed to reconcile North Korea’s nuclear ambitions with U.S.-led sanctions. While Trump has recently used social media to highlight his past meetings with Kim Jong Un, the G7 bloc remains officially committed to complete denuclearization, as reiterated in a joint statement Wednesday. Beyond the Korean Peninsula, the leaders also touched upon the conflict in the Middle East and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring a broad agenda for the renewed U.S.-South Korean partnership.
