The government is modeling its approach after recent legislative pushes in Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam. To build consensus, the administration launched a dedicated website to solicit public feedback and commissioned a committee led by a former Supreme Court judge to study regional religious traditions. Yadav argues that existing personal laws are outdated and that a unified framework is necessary to modernize family practices.
Opposition members have already signaled a fierce legislative battle. Congress MLA Arif Masood challenged the legitimacy of the move, noting that the exclusion of tribal communities undermines the very concept of a "uniform" code. Masood further criticized the potential impact on live-in relationships, urging a broader rejection of the bill. As the July deadline approaches, the state must navigate these conflicting views while attempting to replicate the successful passage of similar legislation seen elsewhere in India.
