Hungary probes seized Ukrainian assets following regime change

Seven Ukrainians transporting $82 million in cash and gold were detained by Hungarian authorities in March, sparking an internal government investigation. The seizure occurred under the previous administration, which frequently clashed with Kyiv, prompting the newly elected government to demand an immediate accounting of the operation’s legitimacy.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who secured victory in April, signaled a sharp pivot in state policy by calling for the prosecutor general to resolve the incident without delay. The assets, consisting of currency and precious metals, were held in two armored vehicles operated by Ukraine’s Oschadbank. The bank maintains the transport was a routine logistical procedure performed weekly since the onset of the conflict with Russia.

Under the previous leadership of Viktor Orban, Hungary maintained a posture of skepticism toward Ukrainian support, frequently vetoing European Union sanctions and financial aid packages. The seized cargo was returned to Ukraine just days before Magyar took office. The prosecutor general’s office confirmed it is currently reviewing the actions of the tax authority and counter-terrorism forces involved in the detention to determine if political motives influenced the seizure.
