Pentagon Deploys Musk’s Grok for Military Targeting Operations

Project Maven, the U.S. military’s AI-assisted targeting program, is now utilizing Elon Musk’s Grok model for combat operations. The Department of Justice confirmed the integration in a legal filing, citing the technology’s role in strikes against targets in Iran as a matter of national security.

Federal prosecutors disclosed the military application of Grok while defending xAI against an environmental lawsuit filed by the NAACP. The civil rights group alleges that the company’s data center in Memphis operates turbines in violation of the Clean Air Act, disproportionately impacting Black neighborhoods. However, the government argues that halting these operations would jeopardize ongoing defense missions that rely on the model’s processing power.

Pentagon AI chief Cameron Stanley testified that Grok has significantly boosted efficiency within the Maven Smart Systems framework. According to the filing, the technology enabled U.S. forces to deploy over 2,000 munitions against distinct targets within a 96-hour window during Operation Epic Fury. This pivot follows the government’s February termination of its contract with Anthropic, whose Claude model was previously used for similar operations until the firm refused to support fully automated strikes or mass surveillance initiatives. While xAI maintains that its turbines are mobile and exempt from local environmental regulations, the legal standoff highlights the tightening intersection between private AI development and state military strategy.
