The urgency of these talks follows a series of strikes on commercial tankers, including a vessel under Turkish ownership, which have transformed the Black Sea into a high-risk zone for international shipping. During recent high-level consultations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Fidan underscored that Turkey’s security interests are inextricably linked to the stability of these maritime corridors.
While maintaining a delicate balance by preserving diplomatic channels with both the Kremlin and the Zelensky administration, Ankara has condemned strikes against civilian infrastructure. Having hosted NATO leadership this July, Turkey intends to leverage its geopolitical position to prevent further escalation, aiming to transition from a facilitator of grain corridors to a primary architect of a broader ceasefire.
