West Bengal Political Standoff as TMC Rebels Seek NCPI Merger

A deepening schism within the Trinamool Congress has reached the office of the Lok Sabha Speaker, where a group of 20 dissident MPs is pushing for a formal merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. The move has ignited a fierce parliamentary dispute over the legal legitimacy of the breakaway faction.

The dissident group, fronted by senior parliamentarian Sudip Bandyopadhyay, asserts that they have crossed the two-thirds threshold required under anti-defection laws to justify their transition to a new political entity. The Speaker is currently reviewing the petition, with final deliberations expected to follow consultations with both the loyalist TMC leadership and the rebel camp.

Kirti Azad, representing the loyalist wing, has dismissed the maneuver as an undemocratic attempt to subvert the party’s mandate under Mamata Banerjee. He further challenged the standing of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, characterizing it as an unrecognized political organization that currently holds no seats within the house. While the NCPI has signaled its willingness to integrate the defectors, the outcome rests on whether the Speaker deems the split compliant with constitutional requirements for party mergers.
