B-52 Stratofortress Crashes in Mojave Desert

Eight crew members are presumed dead after a U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress went down Monday morning shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base. The aircraft, engaged in a routine test mission, plummeted into the Mojave Desert approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles at roughly 11:20 a.m.

Aerial surveillance of the impact site revealed a scorched crater spanning the size of a football field. Emergency response teams have arrived at the wreckage to secure the perimeter and begin the recovery process. While the cause of the disaster remains unknown, military officials have launched a formal investigation into the flight data and mechanical systems.

This incident represents a rare failure for the long-range bomber fleet, which has maintained a relatively stable safety record in recent years. The crash serves as the first major loss for the B-52 program since a 2016 accident in Guam.
