New European Bauhaus Pushes for Inclusive and Sustainable Urban Living

European leaders and urban experts gathered in Brussels from June 9-13 for the New European Bauhaus Festival, framing affordable housing and community-led design as essential tools to restore public trust in democratic institutions and accelerate the continent's transition toward a sustainable, circular economy.

The five-day event spotlighted the growing urgency of the housing crisis, which European Council President António Costa identified as a primary driver of political disillusionment. To combat this, the New European Bauhaus (NEB) movement is prioritizing inclusive, community-centric projects that emphasize resilience. Speakers from Ukraine demonstrated how this grassroots approach fosters a sense of belonging and stability even amidst the challenges of war.

Sustainability strategies discussed at the festival focused on repurposing existing infrastructure rather than new construction. By renovating heritage sites and vacant offices, architects and designers can significantly reduce embodied carbon while creating environments that residents value. This shift toward circularity is supported by a €50 million injection into the NEB Academy, a decentralized initiative launched in 2024 to scale expertise. The Academy is currently expanding its influence beyond Europe, with established hubs in Ukraine and planned sites in Japan and Brazil.

Commissioner Jessika Roswall underscored the economic and social benefits of this model, noting that low-carbon housing reduces household costs and improves public well-being. During the event, the festival also awarded the NEB Trophy to Luca Ambrosi for his design, 'Aurora,' which symbolizes hope and renewal. With nearly €1.4 billion allocated to NEB projects between 2021 and 2027, the movement continues to grow, currently encompassing over 2,000 members dedicated to merging aesthetics with environmental responsibility.
