Nigerian Court Strips Five Parties of Electoral Status

A federal judge in Nigeria has ordered the immediate de-registration of five opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress, for failing to meet constitutional performance benchmarks. The move, issued by Judge Peter Lifu on Monday, threatens to reshape the electoral map just months before the upcoming national polls.

The ruling mandates that the Independent National Electoral Commission remove these parties from the ballot for missing mandatory thresholds, which require winning at least one elective seat or securing 25% of the vote in a state during presidential contests. This legal blow strikes at the ambitions of presidential hopeful Atiku Abubakar, who relied on the African Democratic Congress platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

Bolaji Abdullahi, speaking for the affected party, labeled the court's intervention a direct invitation to anarchy. The organization has vowed to challenge the decision through the appellate process, setting the stage for a protracted legal battle that could disrupt the scheduled January elections.
