US and Iran Reach Provisional Agreement on Strait of Hormuz Access

Amid the G7 summit in France, President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Iran that mandates the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. While the deal was signed digitally on Sunday, the administration maintains that any potential sanctions relief remains strictly tied to Iran meeting specific behavioral benchmarks.

The formal signing ceremony is scheduled for this Friday, with the full text of the arrangement expected to follow shortly after. President Trump, who disclosed the breakthrough while meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, has yet to confirm his own attendance at the upcoming Geneva event. Vice President JD Vance is currently designated to represent the United States in his stead.

Despite the diplomatic breakthrough, the administration is emphasizing a cautious approach. Vice President Vance clarified that the agreement does not trigger any immediate release of frozen funds or assets. Instead, the deal functions as a conditional framework, where the promise of future sanctions relief is contingent upon Tehran’s sustained adherence to the established behavioral expectations.
