The Israeli government’s stance threatens to dismantle the fragile ceasefire agreement reached by Washington and Tehran just hours earlier. While the US administration pushed for an immediate cessation of hostilities against Hezbollah, Tel Aviv has intensified its bombardment of Beirut’s suburbs. Katz underscored that the IDF would remain in these security zones indefinitely, asserting that Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet is committed to a policy of permanent territorial control to protect Israeli border communities from jihadist elements.
This defiance complicates the broader diplomatic strategy pursued by the Trump administration, which recently claimed credit for deterring Iran’s nuclear ambitions. However, the disconnect is growing; Trump has privately characterized Netanyahu as a difficult partner, while Israel remains excluded from the direct negotiations between the two powers. With domestic elections looming, Netanyahu faces significant internal pressure to maintain the military offensive against Iranian proxies, particularly regarding the fallout from the October 7, 2024, Hamas attacks. Over the last thirty months, Israel has secured control over 1,000 square kilometers of foreign territory, a footprint the government now shows little interest in relinquishing.
