Since orchestrating the 2021 coup that dismantled Myanmar’s democratic structures and triggered broad international sanctions, Hlaing has maintained an iron grip on the nation. His ascension to the presidency this April, confirmed by a military-aligned parliament, signaled a strategic pivot from battlefield commander to civilian head of state. This trip to Beijing follows a similar diplomatic overture to India, highlighting a concerted campaign to expand his government's limited international horizons.
During his stay, Hlaing will meet with President Xi Jinping to discuss strategic cooperation, alongside scheduled sessions with Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, the head of China’s legislature. For Beijing, the visit offers a chance to solidify influence over its neighbor, while for the Myanmar administration, it serves as a vital signal that the country is seeking to move beyond the isolation of the last three years.
