TMC Fractures as 20 MPs Defect to NCPI

Twenty Trinamool Congress members of parliament have abandoned Mamata Banerjee’s party to join the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, signaling a deepening rift within the West Bengal political establishment. The defectors have already petitioned Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to formalize their new affiliation and secure independent seating in the House.

The mass departure has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, with High Court advocate Karuna Sagar labeling the exodus a symptom of internal collapse. Sagar argued that the move reflects a total erosion of confidence in the party's current leadership and operational strategy. He is now pushing for a rigorous legal audit of the realignment to determine if the switch adheres to the strictures of anti-defection statutes.

Beyond the parliamentary maneuvering, the defectors have sought direct engagement with Union Minister Bhupender Yadav to consolidate their status under the NCPI banner. As the TMC leadership faces mounting pressure to address the transparency of its internal governance, this realignment poses a significant challenge to the party’s cohesion in the Lok Sabha.
