Kerala Political Clash Over Vice-Chancellors' RSS Event Attendance

Union Minister V. Muraleedharan has demanded that Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan retract his criticism of three vice-chancellors who attended a function featuring RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Muraleedharan dismissed the Chief Minister’s objections as ridiculous, asserting that no legal mandate prohibits educators from participating in events hosted by the organization.

The controversy erupted after Satheesan questioned the propriety of academic leaders aligning with the RSS. In a sharp rebuttal delivered in Thrissur, Muraleedharan defended the group as a patriotic force dedicated to national service, claiming its influence and credibility are firmly established across the country. He warned that the Chief Minister’s stance invites public mockery rather than reflecting constitutional duty.

State BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar amplified the pressure, labeling Satheesan’s remarks as unbecoming of his office. Chandrasekhar highlighted an alleged hypocrisy in the Chief Minister’s appeal to secular values, pointing to the political alliances maintained by Satheesan’s own party. This dispute highlights the deepening friction in Kerala regarding the intersection of academic independence, political ideology, and the state’s secular framework.
