Assam Chief Minister Pitches Geographic Equity for National Growth

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has proposed a fundamental shift in India's development trajectory, advocating for a 'Geographic Equity' model to ensure economic gains reach the nation’s periphery. Speaking at a NITI Aayog assembly in New Delhi, he argued that future growth must move beyond central hubs.

The proposed strategy aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, aiming to bridge long-standing regional disparities that have historically hindered North Eastern states. Sarma noted that while the current national agenda has successfully elevated the region from a marginal concern to a central strategic pillar—largely through infrastructure expansion and the Act East Policy—physical barriers still limit the full potential of local economies.

To counter these constraints, the new framework demands targeted policy interventions designed to integrate the North East more deeply into the broader Asian market. By positioning Assam as a transformative hub, the state leadership seeks to turn geographic isolation into a logistical advantage, ensuring that the next wave of industrial and investor interest is distributed equitably across the map rather than concentrated in established centers.
