Congress Stages Protest After Rajya Sabha Nomination Rejection

Protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar on Friday to denounce the Election Commission’s decision to disqualify Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan from the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha race. Brandishing signs decrying stolen seats, party leaders framed the rejection as a direct assault on the integrity of the electoral process.

The demonstration marks a volatile escalation in the dispute over Natarajan’s candidacy, which electoral authorities blocked citing irregularities in her affidavit. Congress officials have dismissed these findings as a politically motivated fabrication, accusing the Commission of acting in tandem with the ruling BJP. Umang Singhar, the Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, warned that the judiciary must intervene to protect democratic norms, suggesting the current trajectory threatens the stability of future elections.

Rahul Gandhi amplified the party’s stance, alleging a coordinated conspiracy he dubbed 'seat chori.' He pointed to the nomination of BJP-backed candidate Parimal Nathwani as evidence of a double standard, noting that the Election Commission applied its scrutiny unevenly. Following a failed attempt by a ten-member delegation to resolve the matter directly with the Chief Election Commissioner, the party has moved its grievances to the public square, signaling a prolonged confrontation over the legitimacy of the electoral body's recent rulings.
