India Targets Industrial Autonomy Through Coal Gasification Push

Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy has officially inaugurated what he describes as the 'coal gasification decade,' a strategic pivot designed to slash import dependence. By converting coal into syngas, New Delhi aims to fortify the domestic steel, chemical, and fertiliser sectors through a state-backed industrial expansion.

Speaking at a roadshow in Hyderabad, Reddy framed the initiative as a commercial imperative rather than a simple policy mandate. He urged private sector leaders to capitalize on the technology, citing the city's mature industrial infrastructure as a launchpad for broader economic integration. The government has already moved to accelerate the scheme, issuing a formal Request for Proposal shortly after securing Cabinet approval.

This transition relies on the versatility of gasified coal, which serves as a feedstock for essential industrial processes. Officials emphasize that the current framework is designed for transparency, aiming to lower the barrier for corporate partnerships. By scaling this technology, the government seeks to anchor its long-term vision for self-reliance in the heavy industry sector.
