The dispute, which first reached the World Trade Organization in 2004, centers on allegations of illegal state support for aerospace giants Boeing and Airbus. In 2019, the WTO permitted the U.S. to impose $7.5 billion in tariffs, later countered by $4 billion in EU measures. While both powers initially sought a unified front against non-market competition from China, those diplomatic ambitions have stalled.

The uncertainty has left exporters in limbo, as the existing tariff regime continues to impact a wide range of goods, excluding aircraft and their components, while the threat of renewed trade barriers hangs over the transatlantic relationship.
