Congress Denies Merger Talk While Escalating Election Integrity Fight

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal has categorically dismissed speculation regarding a potential merger with the Trinamool Congress, labeling such reports as baseless. The party now pivots its focus toward allegations of institutional bias, specifically targeting the rejection of its Rajya Sabha candidate nominations in Madhya Pradesh.

Venugopal framed recent high-level meetings between leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi as strategic coordination for the India Alliance rather than consolidation efforts. He insisted these interactions remain strictly confined to building a unified front against the central government’s current policies.

The rhetoric sharpened significantly regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The party has leveled accusations of 'seat chori'—or seat theft—after election officials rejected the nomination of Meenakshi Natrajan. Party leadership contends that the criteria for rejection were applied selectively, contrasting this decision with the acceptance of other flawed filings.

Beyond electoral disputes, Venugopal directed harsh criticism at the Election Commission of India for its perceived sluggishness in addressing formal grievances. He characterized the current state of democratic processes as deeply concerning, citing a broader pattern of administrative failure that extends to the management of national economic challenges such as stagnant employment rates and persistent inflation.
