The incident began when state troopers attempted to stop 40-year-old Victor Rivas of Montz, whose vehicle had been reported for reckless driving on Interstate 10. Following a tire blowout and a collision with a concrete barrier, Rivas abandoned his car on Interstate 310 and fled on foot into the dense marshland. Despite being spotted by deputies from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, the suspect repeatedly dove back into the swamp to avoid capture.
Body camera footage captured the moment the alligator lunged at Rivas in the water. Although the animal injured his arms, Rivas persisted in his attempt to escape, forcing officers to track him via drone until he emerged from the woodline. Following medical treatment at a local hospital, Rivas was booked on charges of driving while impaired and resisting an officer, with additional warrants pending for a hit-and-run. The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office later posted a humorous AI-generated image of an alligator in a police uniform, reminding the public that Louisiana swamps are as hazardous to fugitives as they are to the law.
