Cross-Border Strikes Ignite Tensions Between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Thirteen civilians, including women and children, died Wednesday when Pakistani airstrikes hit residential areas across the provinces of Kunar, Khost, and Paktika. Afghan Taliban officials condemned the operation as a direct violation of their airspace, marking a volatile escalation in the ongoing border friction between the two neighboring states.

Pakistan framed the operation as a series of calibrated strikes against militant infrastructure, claiming to have neutralized 26 fighters. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated the mission targeted a specific training facility and an ammunition cache, positioning the aggression as a necessary response to a surge in cross-border violence. Data from ACLED indicates that militant attacks in Pakistan have quadrupled since 2022, fueling Islamabad’s accusations that Kabul provides sanctuary to insurgent groups. The Taliban denies these claims, maintaining that no such safe havens exist within their borders. Despite attempts by China to mediate a diplomatic resolution, the cycle of violence continues to destabilize the region, leaving local populations caught in the crossfire of escalating geopolitical hostility.
