US Navy Deploys AI Drone Boat for First Combat Rescue

A 24-foot Saronic Corsair autonomous vessel successfully recovered two pilots from a downed Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, marking the first time the US military has utilized an unmanned surface craft to pull personnel from open water during a high-stakes maritime operation.

The rescue occurred off the coast of Oman following the loss of the aircraft during a patrol. This mission signals a shift in the Pentagon’s integration of uncrewed systems into traditional naval warfare, utilizing technology developed by Texas-based Saronic Technologies. The vessel, which reaches speeds of 140 kmph and carries a 1,000-pound payload, operates under the Navy’s Task Force 59, an initiative designed to scale AI-powered maritime assets.

President Donald Trump confirmed the helicopter was downed by Iranian forces, prompting an immediate series of retaliatory strikes against Iranian radar and air defense installations near Jask, Bandar Abbas, and Qeshm Island. While the US military claims these targets were strategic, the escalation has drawn a sharp rebuke from Tehran. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Iran would not leave the strikes unanswered, telling American forces to vacate the region to ensure their safety. The incident arrives amid a broader regional conflict, further jeopardizing a fragile ceasefire that has held for nearly 100 days.
