West Bengal to rename Digha Jagannath Temple after naming dispute

The West Bengal government will strip the word "Dham" from the newly constructed Jagannath Temple in Digha, conceding to objections that the title is uniquely reserved for the historic 12th-century shrine in Puri. The decision follows a formal appeal from Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi regarding the naming controversy.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed the change after receiving a letter from the Odisha leadership, delivered by Puri MP Sambit Patra to West Bengal Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The Digha complex, which cost 250 crore rupees and spans 20 acres, was inaugurated in April 2025. While local officials emphasized that the site will continue to function as a place of worship for the same deities, the administration acknowledged that the original naming choice disregarded the sentiments of devotees who view the term "Dham" as exclusive to the Puri site.

Suvendu Adhikari noted that the site was originally greenlit as a cultural center, promising that while the terminology will shift to "Jagannath Temple," the facility will maintain its religious practices. Sambit Patra welcomed the resolution, stating that the move respects the traditions of Sanatan Dharma followers and resolves a friction point that had persisted since the temple's opening. The site will no longer carry the title that sparked pushback from Odisha’s political and spiritual leaders.
