The four-year Boosting Agrifood Systems Resilience in Sudan Project aims to revitalize rainfed agricultural zones in Sennar and Blue Nile states. These regions, historically central to the nation’s food supply, have struggled under the weight of persistent conflict and crumbling infrastructure. By targeting 230,000 farming households, the program intends to produce nearly one million metric tons of cereals and pulses—enough to meet the annual consumption needs of millions.
Beyond immediate output, the project emphasizes long-term agribusiness skills and the formation of farmer groups. WFP Sudan Country Director Abdallah Alwardat noted that local farmers have already proven their capability to maintain yields in sorghum and wheat despite the ongoing instability. African Development Bank Country Manager David Muthusi Mutuku characterized the $87 million injection as a foundational investment in rural economic recovery, intended to help communities withstand future shocks. This effort brings the total collaborative investment between the two organizations in Sudan to $267 million since 2023, signaling a strategic shift toward systemic agricultural recovery.
