TMC Faction Moves for Independence in Lok Sabha

Twenty Trinamool Congress members have formally requested separate seating in the Lok Sabha, signaling a decisive fracture within Mamata Banerjee’s ranks. MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar confirmed the move, framing the split as a necessary shift to align with central development goals while distancing the group from current state governance.

The dissident faction, which includes Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Shekhar Ray, is positioning itself to bypass the Tenth Schedule’s anti-defection law. By securing the support of 20 MPs, the group aims to clear the two-thirds threshold required to avoid automatic disqualification. This tactical maneuvering follows a series of meetings at the residence of Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Ghosh Dastidar, once a close ally of Banerjee, cited rampant lawlessness and economic mismanagement as the catalysts for the rebellion. With the Trinamool Congress holding 28 seats in the house, the defection of 19 or more members could fundamentally dismantle the party’s parliamentary cohesion. As Banerjee navigates opposition circles in New Delhi, this internal revolt—rooted in claims of unbearable pressure on the state apparatus—marks the most significant threat to her authority to date.
