The Italian coastguard coordinated the initial response after the vessel, carrying approximately 60 people, overturned in open water. While the Tuncay Sagun 2 fishing vessel pulled nearly 50 passengers to safety, the death toll was confirmed by the charity group Sea-Watch on Monday.
This incident adds to a grim annual tally, with the International Organization for Migration recording over 827 deaths or disappearances in the central Mediterranean during 2023. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration has prioritized stricter immigration controls in Italy, resulting in a decline in total landings compared to the previous year, yet the risks for those attempting the voyage remain extreme as seasonal departures from North Africa accelerate.
