The current friction stems from U.S. proposals to impose a 12.5% tariff on Indian goods, a move justified by Washington through concerns regarding excess industrial capacity and labor practices. An Indian trade official, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that securing competitive rates and long-term protection against future levies remains the primary objective for the Indian delegation.
These discussions gained urgency following meetings in New Delhi between Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Brendan Lynch and local counterparts. The diplomatic effort seeks to resolve long-standing trade tensions that were further complicated when the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated earlier tariff policies established during the Trump administration. Both sides remain focused on bridging these gaps before the mid-July target for a finalized agreement.
