French Fighter Jet Intercepts Unknown Drone Over Latvia

A French Rafale fighter jet intercepted and neutralized an unauthorized drone Monday after the craft crossed into Latvian airspace from Russia. The incident, occurring amid heightened regional volatility, forced residents in the eastern border districts to seek shelter as NATO forces scrambled to maintain the integrity of the alliance's eastern flank.

The Latvian military attributes the breach to Russian electromagnetic warfare, though officials stopped short of definitively identifying the drone’s origin. The intercept was conducted by a French aircraft operating from Lithuania’s Siauliai airfield, a deployment maintained under the long-standing NATO Baltic Air Police mission.

This security alert follows a pattern of increased drone activity along the border, a friction point intensified by the ongoing war in Ukraine. While the initial threat was neutralized, a second warning issued later the same day underscored the fragile security environment for local populations. NATO has enforced these defensive patrols since 2004, but the frequency of such incursions has placed the alliance’s eastern member states under significant, renewed pressure.
