The incident occurred near tracks 5 and 6 of the transit hub, leaving behind a scene of medical gauze and blood-stained floors. City Comptroller Mark Levine characterized the suspect as an emotionally disturbed individual experiencing homelessness. While the New York Fire Department initially estimated five casualties, Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the higher count of six victims shortly after the scene was secured.
Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the assault as an act of horrific violence, emphasizing the necessity of public safety as the city braces for high-profile gatherings. The violence complicates an already tense security environment. Madison Square Garden, situated directly above the station, is set to host NBA Finals games this week, with President Donald Trump expected to attend Monday's match. Authorities had already canceled an outdoor watch party scheduled for Monday following rowdy behavior and 26 arrests during a previous gathering on Friday, which included the assault of a police officer.
