Congress and BJP Maneuver for Rajya Sabha Supremacy

With the Election Commission opening the window for biennial polls across ten states, India’s two primary political forces are locked in a high-stakes scramble to secure 24 Rajya Sabha seats. The contest, culminating in a June 8 nomination deadline, serves as a critical test for party influence in the upper house.

In Karnataka, Congress leader Saleem Ahmed signaled a push for total victory, confirming the party will finalize its Legislative Council nominations this Monday. Ahmed also openly acknowledged his ambition for a cabinet role, though he deferred final authority on such appointments to the Chief Minister and the party’s central leadership. This local push mirrors a larger national strategy, underscored by AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge filing his nomination at the Vidhana Soudha complex.

Congress has finalized a diverse roster for the upper house, including Mansoor Ali Khan and Pawan Khera. Not to be outdone, the BJP has unveiled a list of 11 candidates spanning the country. By fielding figures like Tai Tagak in Arunachal Pradesh and Debashish Samantaray in Odisha, the BJP is looking to fortify its legislative standing against the Congress offensive.
