With major opposition leaders in exile or silenced, President Mamady Doumbouya has cemented his control over Guinea’s political landscape. His coalition secured a dominant majority in the national legislature, effectively sidelining rivals and neutralizing the primary political forces that once challenged his military-backed administration since the 2021 coup.
The Generation for Modernity and Development alliance captured at least 100 of the 147 available seats, according to preliminary electoral data. This result creates a legislative stronghold for the president in a nation rich in bauxite reserves. While officials cited a 52.87% voter turnout, the electoral process proceeded without the participation of the country’s most prominent opposition figures, including former president Alpha Conde and opposition leaders Cellou Dalein Diallo and Sidya Toure.Diallo, who remains in exile, has called for direct resistance to the administration, labeling the consolidation of power an affront to democratic processes. As the nation awaits the resolution of outstanding electoral disputes, the victory signals a shift toward a more centralized regime, further distancing the current government from the political volatility that followed the 2021 military takeover.
