The Janata Dal (United) has signaled a generational shift in Bihar politics by nominating Nishant Kumar, son of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, for the upcoming Legislative Council elections. The party’s list, unveiled this week, balances regional representation with a strategic eye on the state’s key electoral districts.
Nishant Kumar will contest from Patna, while Bharti Mehta and Shivrani Devi Prajapati secure nominations for Madhubani and West Champaran, respectively. Beyond these council seats, the party has tapped Lalan Prasad to contest the critical Sheikhpura bye-election. The Election Commission has mandated that the voting process for these vacancies involve active participation from members of the Legislative Assembly.Polling is locked for June 18, 2026, with the window open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Votes will be tallied the same evening, as officials aim to finalize the results by June 20. This accelerated schedule ensures the new members are seated before current terms expire on June 28.
