Over 1,000 people fled the docks at Constanta on Friday after a maritime drone detonated within Romania’s largest Black Sea harbor. The blast, which triggered a massive security sweep by ships and helicopters, marks a sharp escalation in regional volatility as the spillover from the Ukraine war hits NATO territory.
Ukraine’s navy confirmed the vessel lost control during a mission before drifting into Romanian waters, pinning the failure on Russian electronic interference. This incident follows a separate strike just one week prior, when a drone hit an apartment building in the border city of Galati—the first such impact on a densely populated area within a NATO state.Russian embassy officials in Bucharest denied responsibility for the Constanta explosion, claiming the device was not of Russian origin. While the site remains a critical hub for Ukrainian grain exports and fuel imports, the repeat incursions have forced authorities to ramp up patrols. The European Union has issued warnings regarding the growing threat posed by Russian operations, as the Black Sea increasingly transforms into a precarious theater of conflict.
